The Penetrant Testing (PT) endorsement extends a Certified Welding Inspector certification into a nondestructive examination method rather than a welding code. It certifies that you can actually perform liquid penetrant testing, the surface-flaw method that works on both ferrous and non-ferrous material, and document it. It is the companion to the Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) endorsement, and like MT it is priced and structured as a method endorsement rather than a code-navigation exam.

What penetrant testing actually covers

Liquid penetrant testing finds surface-breaking discontinuities by drawing a colored penetrant into a flaw, removing the excess, and applying a developer that pulls the trapped penetrant back out to reveal the indication. The AWS endorsement is written around the visible, solvent-removable method applied to ferrous and non-ferrous weld material, using the AWS PT Book of Specifications supplied at the exam along with the underlying industry references such as ASTM E-165, the standard test method for liquid penetrant examination, and the ASNT training material inspectors know from the NDE side of the trade.

The strength of PT is that it works on non-magnetic material, where magnetic particle testing cannot, so the two methods together cover surface-flaw detection across both magnetic and non-magnetic welds. PT still only finds flaws that break the surface, so like MT it is not a substitute for the volumetric methods, radiography and ultrasonics, that look inside the weld. Documenting where PT applies, and where it does not, is part of the competence the endorsement shows.

Who needs the PT endorsement

The audience is any shop or agency that needs an inspector able to document surface-flaw NDE competence on non-magnetic material, not just perform a visual inspection. Fabricators working aluminum, stainless, and other non-ferrous material whose contracts call for penetrant testing, third-party inspection agencies staffing multi-method jobs, and inspectors broadening past visual work into NDE are the core. It pairs naturally with the MT endorsement, since together they cover surface-flaw detection in both magnetic and non-magnetic material.

Exam format, fee, and the practical

PT is a method endorsement, and its exam is built in three components, closer to the base CWI structure than to an open-book code endorsement: a Part B practical examination performed at an accredited testing facility, plus Parts A and C theoretical exams taken at a Prometric test center. To pass you must score at least 70 percent on each section and an 80 percent overall average. The exam fee is $505 for AWS members and $770 for non-members, higher than the $445/$540 code-endorsement tier.

There is one more cost the fee tables cannot pin down for you. The hands-on practical is administered by an independent Authorized Training Facility (ATF), and the ATF, not AWS, sets that practical fee, so it varies by facility and there is no single official number to quote. Budget for it as a separate line and contact the ATF you plan to test at for its current figure. Using it as your recertification

A CWI certification is valid for nine years, and passing a new endorsement is one of the routes that satisfies that year-nine recertification when you take it within the eleven months before your certification expires. If you were going to add PT anyway and your recert deadline is near, timing it inside that window can fold two expenses into one. Who should add it, and who should skip it

Add PT if your work or your contracts call for documented penetrant testing, especially on non-magnetic material, if you want to move from visual-only inspection into NDE, or if you want a new endorsement that doubles as your recert. Weigh the higher method-endorsement fee and the separate ATF practical cost carefully: if nothing in your work actually asks for PT, a code endorsement matched to your industry, such as D1.1 for structural steel or the ASME piping endorsement, is usually the better first buy. If your surface-flaw work is on magnetic material, look at MT instead, or add both to cover the full range.
