The Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) endorsement extends a Certified Welding Inspector certification into a nondestructive examination method rather than a welding code. Where the D1.1 or ASME endorsements say you can apply a specific code, the MT endorsement says you can actually perform magnetic particle testing, the surface-flaw method, and document it. What magnetic particle testing actually covers
Magnetic particle testing detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic material by magnetizing the part and applying iron particles that gather at the flux leakage a flaw creates. The AWS endorsement is written around the dry-powder yoke method, the portable field technique an inspector uses to check welds for cracks, laps, and other surface-breaking indications.
