The D1.1 endorsement ties your Certified Welding Inspector certification to AWS D1.1/D1.1M, the Structural Welding Code for steel. It is the most commonly held CWI endorsement, because so much of the built environment, from high-rise frames to general fabrication, is inspected to D1.1. For most inspectors it is the first endorsement worth adding, and for many it is the only one their work ever needs.
What the D1.1 code actually covers
D1.1 governs the welding of carbon and low-alloy steel structures, generally at a base-metal thickness of about 1/8 inch (3 mm) and thicker. It spans statically loaded structures such as building frames and cyclically loaded structures that see fatigue, and it addresses both tubular and non-tubular connections. Its clauses set out prequalification of welding procedures, qualification of procedures and welders, fabrication workmanship, and inspection acceptance criteria, which is exactly the material a structural inspector reads a print against every day.
Knowing what D1.1 does not cover is just as useful. Sheet steel thinner than 1/8 inch falls under D1.3, reinforcing bar under D1.4, aluminum under D1.2, and welded highway bridges under D1.5 when a state DOT specifies it. Pressure vessels and pressure piping are ASME scope, not D1.1. If your work sits in one of those lanes, the matching endorsement is the better buy.
Who inspects to D1.1
Structural steel fabricators, erectors, and the third-party agencies that inspect their work are the core audience: commercial and industrial buildings, general structural fabrication, and bridge fabrication when D1.1 is paired with D1.5. Because building codes and structural specifications reference D1.1 so widely, employers and contracts name it by default, which is why it carries more weight on a resume than any single niche endorsement.
Exam format, fee, and the pinned edition
The endorsement is a separate open-book written exam taken at a Prometric or AWS site. The fee is $445 for AWS members and $540 for non-members, with the non-member price including a one-year AWS membership. Because it is open-book, the exam tests whether you can navigate and apply the code, not whether you have memorized it, so the edition you bring matters.
For the current window AWS pins the D1.1 exam to two editions at once: AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 and :2025. The exam is written to apply to either edition, so you may sit it with whichever of those two code books you own. Always confirm the live fee and pinned edition on the endorsement matrix before you register, since AWS revises the Exam References and Editions Guide over time.
Using it as your recertification
A CWI certification is valid for nine years. Passing a new endorsement can satisfy that year-nine recertification if you take it within the eleven months before your certification expires. If you were going to add D1.1 anyway and your recert deadline is close, timing the exam inside that window folds two expenses into one. Add D1.1 if you inspect structural steel, if an employer or contract calls for inspection to it, or if you want a new endorsement to double as your recert. Skip it, or reach for a different endorsement first, if your day-to-day work is cross-country pipeline (look at API 1104), pressure or process piping (look at the ASME piping endorsement), primarily aluminum (D1.2), or bridge fabrication under a DOT that specifies D1.5.
