The D1.5 endorsement ties your Certified Welding Inspector certification to AASHTO/AWS D1.5/D1.5M, the Bridge Welding Code. It is jointly published by AWS and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and it is the code welded steel highway bridges are built and inspected to. If your work is bridge fabrication for a state DOT, this is frequently not optional but a contract requirement.
What the D1.5 code covers, and why it is stricter than D1.1
D1.5 governs the welding of welded steel bridge members. It shares a lot of structure with D1.1, but it is deliberately more stringent, because a bridge is a fatigue-loaded, life-safety structure with far less tolerance for a weld defect. In practice that means D1.5 carries tighter procedure-qualification rules, notch-toughness (Charpy V-notch) requirements on the steel and the weld, and a fracture-control plan for fracture-critical members, the members whose failure could collapse the span. Workmanship tolerances, allowed processes, and inspection acceptance criteria are correspondingly tighter than the general structural code.
That extra strictness is the whole reason the endorsement exists as its own line. An inspector who knows D1.1 cold still has to know where D1.5 departs from it, and the endorsement is how AWS documents that you do. D1.5 does not cover buildings or general fabrication (that is D1.1), aluminum (D1.2), or railroad rolling stock (D15.1).
Who inspects to D1.5
The audience is narrower than D1.1 but well defined: steel bridge fabricators, the third-party and agency inspectors on DOT bridge contracts, and quality staff at shops that hold bridge-fabrication certifications. Because state DOTs write D1.5 into their bridge specifications, the endorsement tends to be a gating credential for that work rather than a nice-to-have, which is what makes it worth adding for anyone in or entering bridge fabrication.
Exam format, fee, and the pinned edition
D1.5 is a separate open-book written endorsement exam at a Prometric or AWS site. The fee is $445 for AWS members and $540 for non-members, with the non-member price including a one-year AWS membership. Being open-book, it tests whether you can find and apply the bridge code’s stricter provisions under time, which is exactly the skill the work demands.

Using it as your recertification
A CWI certification is valid for nine years. Passing D1.5 can satisfy your year-nine recertification if you take it within the eleven months before your certification expires. Who should add it, and who should skip it
Add D1.5 if you inspect welded steel bridges, if you are moving into DOT bridge fabrication, or if a bridge contract requires inspection to it. Skip it if your steel work is buildings and general fabrication, where D1.1 is the correct code; if you work in aluminum (D1.2); or if you inspect pipeline (API 1104) or pressure piping (the ASME piping endorsement).
