The D15.1 endorsement ties your Certified Welding Inspector certification to AWS D15.1/D15.1M, the Railroad Welding Specification for cars and locomotives. It is the endorsement for welded rolling-stock fabrication, and it is one of the more industry-specific lines on the CWI endorsement list: it is useful inside the rail sector and rarely relevant outside it.
What the D15.1 code covers
D15.1 governs the welding of railroad rolling stock, that is, freight and passenger rail cars and locomotives. It sets weld classes and the associated design, procedure and welder qualification, workmanship, and inspection acceptance criteria for those car and locomotive structures. The point of a rail-specific specification is that a rail car is a repeatedly loaded, in-service structure carrying its own service and inspection expectations, which a general structural steel code is not written to address.
Two boundaries are worth being precise about. D15.1 is about the fabrication of cars and locomotives, not the welding of running rail itself, which is a separate track-welding domain. And it is not the general structural steel code: buildings and general fabrication are D1.1, steel bridges are D1.5, and aluminum is D1.2. D15.1 sits alongside those, aimed squarely at rolling stock.
Who inspects to D15.1
The audience is specific: rail-car and locomotive builders and rebuilders, transit and freight rolling-stock fabricators, and the quality and third-party inspectors on their contracts. Inside that world the endorsement is a clear signal of documented competence in the rail specification; outside it, the credential has little application, which is exactly why it is worth matching to real rail work rather than adding speculatively.
Exam format, fee, and the pinned edition
D15.1 is a separate open-book written endorsement exam at a Prometric or AWS site. The fee is $445 for AWS members and $540 for non-members, with the non-member price including a one-year AWS membership, the standard code-endorsement tier. Being open-book, it tests your ability to navigate and apply the railroad specification rather than to memorize it.

Using it as your recertification
