The shape of the standard: numbered sections plus two annexes
API 1104 is arranged into numbered sections that walk from scope through to repair, followed by two annexes that most Part C traps live in:
- General. Scope: the welding of piping that gathers, transmits, and distributes crude, petroleum products, fuel gases, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen, plus the related facilities. It applies to both new construction and, through the in-service annex, welding on pipe already in operation.
- Normative references. The other publications the standard incorporates.
- Terms, definitions, and abbreviations.
- Specifications. Equipment and material requirements.
- Qualification of welding procedures. The procedure qualification, its essential variables, the destructive test specimens (tensile, nick-break, bend), and the welding procedure specification.
- Qualification of welders. Single and multiple qualification, the tests, and retesting.
- Design and preparation of a joint for production welding. Lineup, weather conditions, and pre- and post-heat.
- Inspection and testing of production welds. Rights of inspection, methods, and the qualification of the inspection and NDT personnel.
- Acceptance standards for nondestructive testing. The heart of Part C: the accept-or- reject limits for the discontinuities found by radiographic, magnetic-particle, penetrant, and ultrasonic examination, plus the visual limits for undercut.
- Repair and removal of defects.
- Procedures for nondestructive testing. The radiographic, magnetic-particle, penetrant, and ultrasonic test methods themselves.
After the numbered sections come the two annexes: Annex A, Alternative Acceptance Standards for Girth Welds, and Annex B, In-Service Welding. The section that answers most Part C questions, and the trap beside it
Pipeline Part C questions cluster into a single section harder than any other endorsement’s questions cluster, and one annex sits right beside it waiting to catch you out.
- “Is this weld acceptable?” lives in the acceptance-standards section (Section 9). When a question gives you a discontinuity, porosity, undercut, incomplete penetration, incomplete fusion, a crack, and asks accept or reject, you are almost always working in the acceptance-standards section and its figures showing maximum allowable dimensions. This is the section to know cold and to tab first.
- The alternative-acceptance annex (Annex A) is the trap. API 1104 allows a second, entirely different acceptance regime based on fracture mechanics and fitness-for-service, an engineering critical assessment, but it applies only when the question or the job specification says the alternative standard is in effect. Reading a discontinuity against the Annex A limits when the question wants the standard Section 9 workmanship limits, or the reverse, is the single most common way candidates throw away pipeline Part C questions. Before you judge a weld, read the stem for which regime is invoked.

The reason structural inspectors slow down on pipeline Part C is that the acceptance logic is different in kind. API 1104’s standard limits were written for thin-wall, high-volume girth welding, and the alternative annex judges a flaw not by a fixed workmanship dimension but by whether the pipe can tolerate it. You navigate the book faster once you have internalized that split: workmanship limits in the acceptance-standards section, fitness-for-service limits in the alternative annex, and the question stem tells you which world you are in. Building navigation speed before exam day
- Tab the acceptance-standards section and its figures first, then the two annexes, then the qualification sections. Confirm with your test center what book form and tabbing are allowed before you rely on it.
- Practice classifying before opening the book: standard acceptance, alternative acceptance, qualification, or in-service. Deciding the section from the stem is the skill being timed.
- Learn the table of contents and index as navigation tools, so a term you cannot place sends you to the index rather than to a minute of paging.
Buy the right edition, then learn to move through it
