NDE Coordination endorsement: is it worth it?

The Nondestructive Examination Coordination endorsement, NDE Coordination for short, is the NDE-facing member of the coordination family, alongside Welding Coordination and Quality Assurance. It is not tied to a welding code like D1.1 and it is not a qualifier exam like the Welder Performance Qualifier. It validates that you can coordinate a nondestructive examination program: the qualification behind it, the methods within it, and the coordination that ties them together. It is aimed at the person who runs an NDE program rather than the technician performing a single test.

What the endorsement actually covers

AWS describes the endorsement across three areas: qualification and certification, NDE testing methods, and NDE coordination. The first is the framework that qualifies and certifies the people and procedures doing the examination. The second is knowledge of the testing methods themselves, the radiographic, ultrasonic, and surface methods a program relies on. The third is the coordination layer: planning which examinations happen where, making sure the right method and qualified personnel are applied, and keeping the results documented and defensible. AWS does not enumerate exactly which methods the exam weights, so we do not claim a specific method breakdown; we describe the three published areas and no more.

Who needs it

The audience is NDE coordinators and quality staff who oversee a nondestructive examination program rather than perform the tests: the people who schedule and coordinate radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic-particle, and penetrant testing, manage the technicians and their qualifications, and own the examination records. If your role is running the NDE program, this endorsement documents it. It sits distinct from the method endorsements a technician might hold, and it complements a code endorsement for a coordinator who also inspects finished welds to a specific code.

What is the NDE Coordination exam format?

The endorsement is a separate closed-book multiple-choice exam of 50 scorable questions, with 5 additional unscored pretest questions mixed in, and you must answer at least 72% correctly to pass. Closed book is worth noting: unlike the open-book qualifier and code endorsements, this exam tests recall of NDE qualification, methods, and coordination knowledge rather than your ability to look answers up, so preparation weights toward knowing the material cold. The 72% pass mark matches the bar used on the main CWI exam parts.

Fee and the prerequisite

The fee is $540 for AWS members and $630 for non-members, the qualifier and coordination endorsement tier on the AWS 2026 price list. You must already hold a current CWI or SCWI certification to sit it, and AWS recommends familiarity with NDE programs and methods going in. Using it as your recertification

A CWI certification is valid for nine years, and passing any endorsement exam within the eleven months before your certification expires satisfies that recertification. NDE Coordination counts. If you were going to add it anyway and your recert deadline is close, timing the exam inside that window folds two expenses into one, and the endorsement then stays valid as long as you keep renewing your CWI on schedule. Who should add it, and who should skip it

Add the NDE Coordination endorsement if you coordinate a nondestructive examination program, if your title is NDE coordinator or you manage RT, UT, MT, and PT activity, or if you want a new endorsement to double as your recert. Reach for a different endorsement first if your work is really coordinating the broader welding quality system, which is the Welding Coordination and Quality Assurance endorsement, if it is qualifying welders or procedures (WPQ or WPQ2), or if you inspect finished welds to a specific code, where a code endorsement such as D1.1 fits better.
